Our Middle School program is geared toward 6th-8th graders with or without rowing experience. You may choose your number of practices per week, based on your experience and goals.
Middle School rowers should register for the NOVICE/DEVELOPMENT Program. Athletes will spend time practicing proper rowing technique, on- and off-water safety, and enjoying the river, while working together to build healthy team dynamics. There will be 1-3 races throughout the season that rowers in this program will be able to attend, based on skill level, allowing them to compete against others with similar skills.
Some Middle School rowers may be eligible for the Competitive team. If interested, please contact Coach Jenn to discuss the opportunity. Athletes in the Competitive Program are expected to attend six practices per week, and some races will be limited to experienced program participants only.

To be reviewed & completed by athlete and parent/guardian TOGETHER at least once per calendar year:
The Release & Waiver Form above should be submitted by prior to the start of the first practice. Athletes will not be allowed on the water without having completed the form!
WHAT TO BRING
REQUIRED TO BRING:
Emergency meds (EpiPen, inhaler, etc.) in a Ziploc bag
Sneakers (for land workouts)
Workout clothes (see below)
Water bottle
SUGGESTED TO BRING:
Hat and/or sunglasses
Sunscreen
Rain Gear (if applicable)
Change of clothes
Athletes should bring clothes that are comfortable for outdoor activity, with the possibility of wind and a bit of water.
Here are a few things to avoid:
Clothes that are overly baggy or bulky. Baggy and bulky clothes can get in the way while rowing, and even get caught in the sliding tracks of the seat. Spandex is not necessary, but clothes that are reasonably slim-fitting are ideal for rowing.
Cotton. Cotton does not insulate when wet, dries slowly, and performs best on land. Basic tech fabrics such as polyester and fleece can take the occasional splash and will keep you more comfortable on the water.
Valuable or otherwise irreplaceable clothes. While rowing is not a particularly rough sport, it does involve carrying things on shoulders, close encounters with river water, and perhaps an occasional run-in with the aforementioned seat tracks. Outfit accordingly. You will earn more style points with beautiful form than with a designer wardrobe!
LOCATION & SAFETY
SCRC is located at an ideal location on the Allegheny River, offering the calmest stretch of water in Pittsburgh. Our “pool” is home to several islands (including a State Park), and beautiful tree-lined shores home to beavers, bald eagles, and post-industrial relics.
Coaches and counselors are certified in First Aid and CPR, and subject to a full criminal background check.
We take safety seriously! River and weather conditions are monitored on an hourly basis, and we take every possible measure to ensure that everyone enjoys their time on the water.
If conditions are not safe or conducive for safe outdoor practice, we will hold practice indoors or remotely.
