WINTER CONDITIONING AT SCRC

Make your fitness goals a reality this winter !

As part of our coached indoor rowing program, you will develop fitness and form on the ergometer (rowing machine) and participate in rowing and strength training workouts at your own level. Exercising alongside SCRC Masters athletes, you’ll get to know the sport of rowing, as well as our special community!

FOR BEGINNERS:

We open our Monday evening session to beginners, where you can learn the basics and quickly get up to speed. After a few sessions (~3-5, depending on your ability), you can participate in any scheduled practice!

$150 per season
OR $15 per class
(first class is free!)

WHAT TO BRING

Rowers should bring clothes that are comfortable for outdoor exercise. Our facility has great natural ventilation, but gets cold. Athletes will be exposed to outdoor temperatures even when training indoors. Dress accordingly (think layers)!

Here are a few things to avoid:

  • Clothes that are overly baggy or bulky. Baggy and bulky clothes can get in the way while rowing, and even get caught in the sliding tracks of the seat. Spandex is not necessary, but clothes that are reasonably slim-fitting are ideal for rowing.

  • Cotton. Cotton is fine for outer layers, but doesn’t perform well when sweaty/wet. Basic tech fabrics such as polyester are best for base layers when working out.

  • Valuable or otherwise irreplaceable clothes. Indoor training is not quite as rough on clothes as rowing on the river, but precious items should still be avoided.

  • Emergency meds (EpiPen, inhaler, etc.) in a Ziploc bag

  • Sneakers (comfortable for running, lifting weights, erging, etc.)

  • Water bottle

  • Change of clothes (optional)

LOCATION & SAFETY

SCRC is located at an ideal location on the Allegheny River, offering the calmest stretch of water in Pittsburgh. Our “pool” is home to several islands (including a State Park), and beautiful tree-lined shores home to beavers, bald eagles, and post-industrial relics.

Coaches and counselors are certified in First Aid and CPR, and subject to a full criminal background check.

We take safety seriously! River and weather conditions are monitored on an hourly basis, and we take every possible measure to ensure that everyone enjoys their time on the water (as well as indoors).

Steel City Rowing Club is located at:
