Junior Rowing Programs
Level 1: (aka Rowing 101)
Participants can be new to rowing or have experience. This recreational program is geared towards the FUNdamentals of the sport and takes an experiential approach to learning. The goal of this program is to teach the basic rowing stroke in a fun environment and with low commitment. This level is recommended for Middle School rowers. There are home scrimmages available and away race participation is at coaches' invite and discretion. Three practices per week are available.
Practices are Monday & Wednesday 4-6pm and Sat 9am.
Requirements: Minimum 2 practices/week required for PE credit at certain participating schools. Recommended that participants be at least 75 pounds, over 5 foot tall, and 6th grade or higher.
Level 2: (development or JV level)
Participants can be new to rowing or have experience. This program is for those looking to improve their skills, get more experience in different sized boats, and begin competing. The goal of this program level is to develop athletes for competition in a supportive and flexible environment. In the Fall Head of the Occoquan and in the Spring Midwest Regional Championships are available races for this level. Racing is highly encouraged. Maximum of four practices per week.
Practices are Mon -Thurs 4-6pm, with Sat 9am as a make-up day .
Requirements: Minimum 3 practices/week required for Certificate of Participation at certain participating schools.
Level 3: (varsity level)
Participants can be new to rowing or have experience. The goal of this program is to give athletes the training and skills needed to race competitively. In the Spring, all rowers wishing to compete in Midwest Regional Championships and qualify for Youth Nationals must commit to this level and race as the Steel City Rowing Club Team. Six practices per week are available.
Practices are Mon - Fri 4-6pm, Sat 9am.
Requirements: Racing in all races and attending a minimum of 4 practices/week unless previously excused or injured. Rowing in the Level 3 program is required for a Varsity Letter at certain participating schools.
